Technical Guide

EXIF data is parsed from the JPEG binary using ArrayBuffer and DataView. The parser locates the EXIF APP1 marker (0xFFE1), reads the TIFF header for byte order, then traverses IFD entries. Each IFD entry contains a tag ID, data type, count, and value/offset. Known tag IDs are mapped to human-readable names. Rational values are converted to decimal. GPS coordinates are converted from DMS to decimal.

Tips & Best Practices

  • 1
Only JPEG files contain EXIF data — PNG and WebP typically do not
  • 2
Check GPS data before sharing photos publicly
  • 3
Shutter speed, ISO, and aperture reveal exposure settings
  • 4
Date fields show when the photo was originally taken
